CosmoFer®

CosmoFer® is a parenteral iron formulation of low molecular weight (Mw) iron dextran with a well-documented safety profile.

Low Mw iron dextran has been used in more than 50 million doses1 and is characterized by significantly less adverse events compared to high Mw iron dextran.2,3,4,5,6,7

The formulation of CosmoFer® is characterized by a strong colloidal complex of a ferric core shielded by dextran chains.8 This gives a strong iron-carbohydrate complex, which is more stable than iron sucrose and iron gluconate.9,10,11,12

The tightly bound iron and the pH-neutral formulation are the reasons why CosmoFer® low Mw iron dextran offers the flexibility of parenteral iron administration, either as an intravenous, intramuscular iron injection or as a total dose iron infusion.8 The use of CosmoFer®, as with the parenteral use of other iron-carbohydrate complexes, carries a risk of immediate severe and potentially lethal anaphylactoid reactions.
